When I removed the vacuum line, I did check it for gas. However, I might not have run the bike enough to suck a siginificant amount of gas into that line. Anyway, it did smell strongly of gas. Then again, it is reasonable for it to smell of gas even if the petcock is working properly. Regardless, that is the only thing thing I changed and the bike is running well.
